| What We Believe: The Honest Seeker Philosophy |
We refer to the philosophy that underlies the Laurel Church as “Honest Seeking”. The philosophy, in a nutshell, is this – we look at the evidence as objectively as we can, then follow it wherever it leads. We consciously resist the temptation common to religion of beginning with our conclusions, then interpreting the available data in such a way as to make it support what we have already decided to believe. Instead, we begin with the data, especially as contained in scripture, then let the data inform our views, always remaining open to the possibility that new information may alter previously held convictions. (You can learn more about the Honest Seeker Concept by clicking on the “Honest Seeking/ Study” tab, then opening the “Core Values Statement”.) A sampling of the kinds of views this approach has lead to is as follows…We believe the Bible to be the Word of God. In addition to Honest Seeking, we promote three other core values, all of which can be further investigated by clicking on the appropriate tabs or by downloading the PDF files “Core Values 1: What To Expect At Laurel” and “Core Values 2: The Honest Seeker”. The additional core values are as follows… Honest WorshipA healthy walk with God includes regular times of praise and adoration. This is the focus of our Sunday morning assemblies. Honest RelationshipsEvery believer needs to be in a God-honoring relationship with a small group of other believers to whom he or she can turn for encouragement and edification. We primarily accomplish this through our Heart To Heart small group ministry. Honest MinistryIt is important for every believer to consciously do good in the name of Jesus. We encourage all of our members to commit to regular times of service through volunteer opportunities provided either by the church or by the community. |
